Inflation: IMF wants interest rates raised by Central Banks

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), has impressed on Central banks globally to raise interest rates, in order to halt the escalating inflationary trends.

IMF Director of Monetary and Capital Markets, Tobias Adrian, made this call

Speaking at a press briefing on the latest Global Financial Stability Report, in Washington DC, United states of America, on Tuesday, the IMF Director of Monetary and Capital Markets, Tobias Adrian described inflation as the most important challenge.

He suggested that actions were needed to aggressively bring inflation down back to target.

Also reacting in a blog on the same day (Tuesday), Adrian noted that the resilience of financial markets would be tested by the war in Ukraine, which is unfolding amid an already slowing recovery from the pandemic.

According to him, “Consumers expect prices to continue to rise rapidly in the short term before inflationary pressures start to recede over the medium term.  But this could change.

“There’s a risk that eventually inflation expectations could de-anchor and there could be more of an expectation of inflation even in the medium term. Central banks have to counteract that by tightening monetary policy, slowing economic activity, to bring inflation down.”

“Europe bears a higher risk than other regions due to its geographic proximity to the war, reliance on Russian energy, and the non-negligible exposure of some banks and other financial institutions to Russian financial assets and markets.”

“Emerging and frontier markets now face higher risks of capital outflows, with differentiation across countries between commodities importers and exporters, even as the US central bank raises interest rates and unwinds its balance sheet.

“Amid geopolitical uncertainty, the interplay of tighter external financial conditions and the US Federal Reserve normalisation is likely to increase the risk of capital flight,” Adrian added.

'Internal crisis may affect the success of our party' - Adamu warns

The new National Chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu has warned his party members that internal wrangling in the party may affect the fortune of the party in 2023 general elections if not not properly handled.

Speaking at the 11th NEC meeting of the party on wednesday in Abuja, Senator Adamu said the party must succeed, saying 'failure is not an option'.

Also speaking at the meeting, President Mohammadu Buhari urged party members to more be mindful of the pitfalls that ousted Peoples Democratic Party from power in 2015.

According to Buhari, the umbrella party thought that only time could oust them from power, believing that it was impossible to lose elections, and the time actually came in 2015 when APC sent them packing.

He reminded the party members that the APC was formed by a merger of Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change, All Nigeria Peoples Party, some members from All Progressives Grand Alliance and the new PDP, which was a faction of the then ruling party.

The President pleaded with all litigants to withdraw cases against the party and put their faith in party mechanisms.

“We put together a committee with clear terms of reference on how to remove the PDP from power. The PDP thought it wasn’t going to be possible. But it happened,’’ he said.

“Now that NEC has vested its powers in NWC for the time being, as requested, and in compliance with the Party Constitution in the overall interest of the Party, I want to assure Mr. Chairman and the entire NWC members of my full support,’’ he said.

We are not price regulator - FCCPC

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has said it is not in its power to regulate consumer prices, saying Nigeria operates a free market economy.

FCCPC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Babatunde Irukera, said in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday that the law establishing the commission had a limited provision on price regulation.

He added that if even such law allowed the government to get involved in prices, required the commission to conduct research and make a recommendation to the President for a limited time of controlling price in a specific sector.

Irukera said, “When the President accepts the recommendation and adopts it, it will be gazetted. It will only be for a limited period of time. Other than that, we don’t regulate price.”

Irukera stated that FCCPC Act had provisions that prohibited exploitative or unjust contract terms, including prices but did not give the commission authority to say prices were too steep.

“Does that give us the authority to just say this thing is too high; this price is going too high? No, it doesn’t. What is not reasonable is not a subjective thing. It’s based on objective standards,” he stated.

Irukera added, “What is unjust and manifestly so is based on objective standards not arbitrary. And it’s not just a number. That something cost N100,000 doesn’t make it unreasonable or unjust. And our regulatory approach must be methodical, and must be transparent and clear.”

Stressing further, Irukera gave an example of how the commission prevented the exploitation of consumers by a supermarket selling hand sanitisers and face masks at manifestly unjust prices during the COVID-19 saga.

He said, “We investigated one popular supermarket and what they had done, a hand sanitiser that was sold for N490 in the morning by noon, the price had increased to N1,400. By 5pm it was N3,400.

“We looked at their inventory, it was showing that they had 45 pieces left, but we couldn’t find it on the shelf or store. They hoarded that for the next day when the prices would keep going up.

“It wasn’t difficult to come to a determination that that was exploitative, manifestly unjust and unreasonable, because there was no rational explanation for that progressive increase.”

He added, “You could find a circumstantial evidentiary basis, which is important for controlling COVID-19 and COVID-19 is now in town. So, there’s a method and a matrix to decide whether something is excessive.”

On the recent price adjustments by pay television provider, MultiChoice, THE PUNCH reported that the FCCPC boss stated that the company was compelled to introduce a one-year price lock that enabled subscribers to pay the same tariff for one year as long as subscription renewal was made before the due date.

He added that the company was also made to introduce toll-free customer care lines and allow subscribers to suspend their accounts up to four times a year as against the previous twice per annum.

2023: Obi decries poverty rate in Nigeria, vows to stop incessant killings

A Presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Peter Obi has decried the poverty rate in Nigeria which according to him, far higher than that of China and India with populations of over 2.8 billion people combined.

Obi, who was in Enugu to consult with state Executive members of the party, lamented that more than fifty percent of young Nigerians who are of production age are doing nothing.

The former governor of Anambra State who noted that natural security is when human beings know where their next meal will come from, told party stakeholders in Enugu State that he will rescue Nigeria from its present economic woes if given an opportunity to lead the country.

Reacting to the dwindling economic fortunes of Nigeria, the presidential hopeful blamed it on poor civilian leadership that has been at the helm of affairs of the country since 1999 till date.

Obi also decried the current country’s debt burden, adding that if nothing urgent was done to change the status quo, the current leaders would plunge the nation into more debt.

He asserted that the best way to save Nigeria from the current economic woes was to shoot up the production sector by ensuring that all borrowings are channeled into the productive sector.

Speaking on the incessant killings across the country, Obi said if given the opportunity to lead he would curtail it to pave way for the production sector to thrive, noting that food security would be one of the top priorities of his administration

“The problem of Nigeria is leadership. The cumulative effect of the failure of our leadership in the past decades is what we are suffering from now. So we just have to do things right. Countries don’t fail overnight.

“We even borrow to service debts. What we are sharing is finished. We need wealth creators. We need to move Nigeria from a consumptive nation into a productive nation," he stressed.

Domestic violence, arrogance and stubbornness not God's plan for marriage- Bamiloye

A Drama Evangelist and Founder and President of Mount Zion Faith Ministries, Mike Bamiloye has stated that domestic violence, arrogance and stubbornness witness in many marriages today are the plan of devil to discredit the institution created by God for humans to enjoy.

He noted that the percentage of men beating their wives are minimal but the men's action has been exploited by the devil to paint all men as irresponsible.

The veteran film maker wrote on Facebook, “Marriage is not a trivial matter before God! It has its root in Heaven. It is the first institution established by God and the devil feared a godly marriage.

He stated that those attacking the institution and advising young ones not to get married are mercenaries of he devil, adding that because devil hates godly homes and marriages, that is why he has brought out wars against marriages and homes from all fronts.

The Christian film maker writes, "That was why the devil struck heavily the moment GOD brought in the union of husband and wife in the Garden of Eden. God is so passionate about it.

“Marriage is designed to produce godly offsprings that will fill the Earth and do the Will of God.

“When God blessed the man and the woman, to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth, He didn’t mean that they should bear bad fruits and multiply arrogant and devilish children!”

“God did not intend the man to beat his wife. It is the devil’s Intention to forfeit the original plans of God for marriage. God never planned that women would be arrogant and stubborn to their husbands. It is the devil’s plan to forfeit the intention of God for marriage.

“The percentage of men beating their wives is very minimal, but the devil has used that to paint all men black and irresponsible,” he said.

“If you are attacking the marriage Institution, you are working for the devil to discredit what the Lord formed.

Delta 2023: Group insists on Ijaw governorship agenda

A group under the umbrella of Ijaw National  Congress, INC, has restated its commitment to the ambition of Ijaw to produce the next governor of Delta State.

The spokesperson for INC, Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha who said this in an interview with newsmen in Warri, Delta State, posited that Ijaw did not shelve their pursuit of the governorship seat at any time as speculated in some quarters.

He described the speculation that Ijaw agreed to wait till 2031 to produce the next governor of Delta State as laughable, unimaginable, unthinkable, untrue, evil and mere political gimmicks.

Oyakemeagbegha stressed that Ijaw people  have never shelved their governorship ambition and will never, adding that the people never had conversation and will never consider such conversation at any time.

He cautioned some Ijaw sons and daughters to refrain from endorsing candidates and making declarations on behalf of the entire Ijaw in the state.

The group leader stated that if there should be any declaration for the Ijaw, it should be the INC that should do so, as the apex socio-cultural group of the Ijaw nation.

Advising that individuals were free to exercise their right to freedom of association by supporting their choice candidates, they should do so on their own and avoid such romances in the name of the Ijaw nation.

He thanked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for allowing a fair playground, describing him as a true democrat.

Kolawole promises to return Fayose's Stomach infrastructure policy, tackles insecurity

As statewide governorship campaign gathering momentum towards June 14 governorship election in Ekiti State, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Bisi Kolawole has promised to return former governor Ayo Fayose's stomach infrastructure policy if elected.

Kolawole who spoke in an interactive session with his supporters in Ado Ekiti on Monday, in preparatory to the takeoff of a statewide political campaign, also vowed to tackle insecurity bedevilling the State.

Kolawole said the confidence of people in the state would be restored to return to the farms, adding that his government would create enabling environment to attract investment to the state for job opportunities and raise the state's revenue to meet the yearning needs of infrastructure development.

Kolawole who is also former legislator and commissioner in the state noted that his strong pedigree will guide him to form a people-centric government, adding that all his activities will be centred around the people.

The gkvernorship candidate said that he would develop the stomach infrastructure policy of the Ayodele Fayose administration, saying, “It is a good policy. Our people must enjoy the dividends of democracy. Nothing stops a governor from giving out part of the food in the Government House to feed the commoners”.

“I will create a security-conscious environment to restore confidence in our people to go back to the farms. Never again will Ekiti people be kidnapped on the roads or in the farms nor will they be sacked or killed in the farms. When there is security, investors will come to establish industries. Then, government revenue will increase. Our people will be employed.”

“Some parts of the state, including Ekiti East, Gbonyin and Ekiti West have been in darkness for a decade. If Biodun Oyebanji, the APC candidate, who had been Secretary to the State Government could not solve the problem of electricity in his Ikogosi country home and Ipole, would he now be able to solve some of the problems confronting Ekiti?," Kolawole queried.

A group of clergymen in the South-south geo-political zone of Nigeria under the aegies of the Network of Clergymen in Nigeria (NCN) has thrown their weight behind the presidential bid of the national leader of All Progress Congress, APC, Ashiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying he represents a "fresh air".

In a statement in Benin-City signed by the Coordinator General from Delta State, Pastor Joseph Francis and Deputy Coordinator, Apostle Chris Odion Ebhodaghe on Monday, the group said Nigeria needs a politician in the mould of the Tinubu, to succeed the incumbent President and therefore urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure that the former Lagos State governor gets the ticket of the party.

The group expressed optimism that Tinubu would bring a fresh breath to the polity haven not been part of the government in the last seven years but just a national leader of his party.

The statement stated that Nigeria is divided along ethnic and religious lines and needed a detribalized Nigerian and somebody with the capacity to accept all.

Afe Babalola calls for suspension of 2023 elections

A legal giant and elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola has called for the suspension of the 2023 general elections until Nigeria has "a new look peoples" constitution which should provide for part-time legislators and non-executive president.

Babalola demanded that an interim government should be installed at the expiration of the current administration of President Mohammadu Buhari in May 2023.

Speaking at a news conference in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, the legal icon said the interim government should be drawn from all living former Presidents and Vice-presidents; some selected ministers and governors and delegate of prominent professional bodies.

The elder statesman stressed that the interim government should be in office for six months to chart a new course for Nigeria, saying the professional association could be drawn from Nigeria Medical Association, Nigeria Bar Association, Nigeria Labour Congress, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Academic Staff Union of Universities and Civil Society Organisations.

Babalola who noted that such delegates should be elected on zero party bases, regretted that the current 1999 Constitution, foisted on Nigerians by the military was no longer in tune with the current realities in Nigeria.

He said the Constitution has made politics become the only lucrative business in Nigeria.

The Universoty proprietor noted that any election that holds under the current scenario will end up producing transactional and recycled leaders, with no ability to turn things around.

He advised that the new Constitution which should be coordinated by the interim government should spell out rules and regulations on improved qualifications of those contesting elections.

He added that the new Constitution should provide for part-time legislators and not full-time legislators, considering the attendant waste of resources.

“The new Constitution should also provide that there shall be no salary, but sitting allowances only for lawmakers.

“It should provide a true federal system of government, instead of the expensive presidential system of government. I suggest a parliamentary system of government, with a unicameral legislature.

“The new Constitution should also provide a body at the local, state and federal levels to screen all aspirants on the sources of their wealth and means of livelihood, a criminal record which includes pending suits,’’ he said.

Chief Babalola added that any person that would become the president of Nigeria should not be older than 60 years of age and must have a varsity degree.

To Mend a Broken Nation Full text of Easter Message to President Buhari by Bishop Mathew H. Kukah, Bishop, Diocese of Sokoto

1: Hello brothers and sisters in Christ, men and women of goodwill everywhere, I send you hearty greetings and felicitations as we celebrate the risen Christ. Easter is here again. For all Christians, Easter is a metaphor for our lives as individuals, families, communities or nations. Easter is a metaphor for how shame, scandal, powerlessness, weakness, and opprobrium suddenly transform into glory, honour, pre-eminence, laudation and applause. It is a fulfilment of what the Master himself had foretold when He said, ‘Unless a grain of wheat falls on the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain, but if it dies, it bears much fruit’ (Jn. 12: 24). And the Psalmist had said, ‘Those who sow in tears will sing when they reap.’ (Ps. 126:5).

2: The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus are central to the Christian faith and yet, as St Paul said, ‘We preach Christ crucified, a scandal to the Jews and nonsense to the Gentiles’ (1 Cor. 1: 23). St Paul continues: ‘What seems to be God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength’ (1 Cor. 1:25). Without the claims of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, millions of people would be Christian today. As with the times of Jesus, the very idea is preposterous and incomprehensible yet St. Paul still insists that ‘If Christ has not been raised, then our faith is a delusion and we are still in our sins’ (1 Cor. 15:17). It is faith in the resurrection of Christ that inspires us Christians to hold firmly to the fact that, like the people of Israel, our dry bones shall rise again (Ez. 37: 11).

3: Our dear country, Nigeria, still totters and wobbles as we screech towards a dangerous and avoidable canyon of dry bones. Nonetheless, we still cling to hope, a hope in the resurrected Christ, knowing as St. Paul; said, ‘this hope does not disappoint us’ (Rm.5:5). Nigerians can no longer recognise their country which has been battered and buffeted by men and women from the dark womb of time. It is no longer necessary to ask how we got here. The real challenge is how to find the slippery rungs on the ladder of ascent so we can climb out. Yet, we ask, ascend to where? For us as Christians, ascent is to the loving embrace of the resurrected Christ who is Lord of history.

4: One would be tempted to ask, what is there to say about our tragic situation today that has not been said? Who is there to speak that has not spoken? Like the friends of Job, we stare at an imponderable tragedy as the nation unravels from all sides. The government has slid into hibernation mode. It is hard to know whether the problem is that those in power do not hear, see, feel, know, or just don’t care. Either way, from this crossroad, we must make a choice, to go forward, turn left or right or return home. None of these choices are easy, yet, guided by the light of the risen Christ, we can reclaim our country from its impending slide to anarchy.

5: The greatest challenge now is how to begin a process of reconstructing our nation hoping that we can hang on and survive the 2023 elections. The real challenge before us now is to look beyond politics and face the challenge of forming character and faith in our country. Here, leaders of religion, Christianity and Islam, need to truthfully face the role of religion in the survival of our country. The Nigerian Constitution has very clearly delineated the fine boundaries between religion and politics. Yet many politicians continue to behave as if they are presiding over both the political and the spiritual realms in their states rather than governing in a Democracy.

6: This conflict between Caesar and God is inbuilt in faith and is part of world history. Many religious leaders often measure their power by how close they are to Caesar, yet Caesar’s embrace is often full of thorns. The challenge is for the religious leader to know that both Caesar and those he represents are answerable to God who created them. The welfare of citizens constitutes the cornerstone for measuring the legitimacy of any political leader. As such, religious leaders must focus more on the issues of welfare, safety and security of ordinary citizens. They must raise their voice when these rights are being trampled upon. A leader must know when to call Caesar a fox and not a horse (Lk. 13:32).

7: The greatest challenge for Nigeria is not even the 2023 elections. It is the prospects for the reconciliation of our people. Here, the Buhari administration sadly has divided our people on the basis of ethnicity, religion, and region, in a way that we have never witnessed in our history. This carefully choreographed agenda has made Nigerians vulnerable and ignited the most divisive form of identity consciousness among our people. Years of friendships, cultural exchange, and collaboration built over time have now come under serious pressure from stereotyping. Notwithstanding these challenges, religious leaders must recover and deploy their moral authority and avoid falling victim to the schemes of politicians and their material enticements.

8: Today, the values of Interfaith dialogue have come under severe strain and pressure with extremists from both sides of our faiths denigrating the idea of dialogue with their counterparts of other faiths. Ignorance and miseducation have combined with prejudice to create the falsehood that somehow, one religion is superior to the others. With so many ill equipped fraudsters posing as religious leaders, there is an obsession with defaming the others and widening our differences.

9: Religious leaders must face the reality that here in Nigeria and elsewhere around the world, millions of people are leaving Christianity and Islam. While we are busy building walls of division with the blocks of prejudice, our members are becoming atheists but we prefer to pretend that we do not see this. We cannot pretend not to hear the footsteps of our faithful who are marching away into atheism and secularism. No threats can stop this, but dialogue can open our hearts.

10: Thank God, in the last few years, we have had some good news from outside the shores of Nigeria. The most noteworthy is the initiative undertaken by both Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque, Egypt, Shaikh Mohammed Al-Tayeb in 2019, when both of them met and signed the Document on Human Fraternity. Pope Francis followed up with the publication of an Encyclical titled, Fratelli Tutti, We are all Brothers, in 2020. The following year, the United Nation’s General Assembly declared February 4, World Day of Fraternity. Both leaders agreed that: ‘We need to develop the awareness that nowadays, we are either all saved together or no one is saved. Poverty, decadence, and suffering in one part of the earth are a silent breeding ground for problems that will end up affecting our entire planet.’

11: We need to start thinking of a Nigeria beyond banditry and kidnapping and the endless circles of violence that have engulfed our communities and nation. We cannot continue to pretend that there are no religious undertones to the violence in the name of God that has given our religions a bad name. The way out is for the state to enforce the secular status of the Nigerian state so as to give citizens the necessary freedoms from the shackles of semi-feudal confusion over the status of religion and the state in a plural Democracy. We must be ready to embrace modernity and work out how to preserve our religions and cultures without turning religion into a tool for tyranny, exclusion, and oppression.

12: In finding our way forward, the President must concede that it is within his powers to decide how we are going to end the war that has engulfed and is tearing down our nation. It seems that the federal government has shown far greater commitment to integrating so called repentant terrorists than getting our children back from kidnappers or keeping our universities open. Earlier last month, Operation Safe Corridor announced that it had graduated 599 members of various terrorist groups who have acquired new skills and are now ready to be integrated into society. The total comes to over a thousand now. It is plausible to note that the programme involves pyscho-social support, rehabilitation, vocational training, skill acquisition and start-ups. Despite all this, the larger issue is that their various communities have expressed their reluctance to receive their erring sons back. Nigerians have no access to the transcripts of the texts of the confessions of these terrorists not to talk of evidence of their commitment to not sin again. We have only the words of the terrorists and the same military that they have been fighting a war with. It speaks volumes when the President and his military hierarchy choose to believe these young men who took up arms and for years waged war against their country, killed, maimed and wasted thousands of lives, destroyed entire communities and now, they are being housed, fed, clothed with public funds. All this while their victims have been forced to make the various IDP camps their new homes! Where is the justice for the victims and the rest of the country they have destroyed?

13: As a priest, I cannot be against a repentant sinner or criminals changing their ways. After all, the doors of forgiveness must always remain open. However, in this case, Nigerians have very little information as to the entire rehabilitation processes. Have these terrorists felt the heat or have they seen the light or, is their repentance a mere strategic and tactical repositioning? So far, we have no evidence that these terrorists have been able to confront their victims not to talk of seeking forgiveness from them. Something is wrong. We see these terrorists adorned in our national colours in their green and white kaftans, trousers, and looking like heroes of the state! Are we to assume that they have become acknowledged models for Nigerian youth? Perhaps the next graduating set might be treated to Presidential handshakes, receptions at the villa with full national colours!

14: Only last week, as if in delayed solidarity, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, in a Statement stated that: ‘It appears that the continuous callous acts of mayhem, killings and arson happening almost on daily or weekly bases around us; either within communities or on the roads we ply, has automatically reset our human psyche that we now have accepted such dastardly acts as part of our lives, to the extent that we no longer feel it….Any government that is incapable of protecting the lives of its citizens has lost the moral justification of being there in the first place….our humanity is being eroded and that erosion is become a new normal.’ Similarly, the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, and the House of Representatives have finally called on the President to resign since, in their view it is now clear that he cannot protect his citizens. This has come three years after the Catholic Bishops’ Statement issued on April 26th, 2018 made the same call that was greeted with cynicism.

15: The challenge of fixing this broken nation is enormous and, as I have said, requires joint efforts. With everything literally broken down, our country has become one big emergency national hospital with full occupancy. Our individual hearts are broken. Our family dreams are broken. Homes are broken. Churches, Mosques, infrastructure are broken. Our educational system is broken. Our children’s lives and future are broken. Our politics is broken. Our economy is broken. Our energy system is broken. Our security system is broken. Our Roads and Rails are broken. Only corruption is alive and well. So, we ask with the Psalmist, We look up to the hills, from where shall come our help? Our help shall come from the name of the Lord (Ps. 121:2).

16: 2023 beckons and the stage is set. The challenge is whether we have learnt any lessons from the tragedy that has afflicted us in the last few years. The Presidency of Nigeria is not a human right based on ethnic, religious or regional sentiments. The next President of Nigeria must be a man or woman with a heart, a sense of empathy and a soul on fire that can set limits to what human indignities visited on citizens that he or she can tolerate. We have no need for any further empty messianic rhetoric laced with deceitful and grandiose religiosity. We need someone who can fix our broken nation, rid our people of the looming dangers of hunger and destitution. Our Presidential aspirants must show evidence from their legacies and antecedents that they know the country well enough and its severe wounds. Whoever wants to govern us must illustrate that he or she understands what has turned our nation into a national hospital and show us plans for our discharge from this horror. Support for INEC and its infrastructure is fundamental to a free and fair election and we condemn in very strong terms all those criminals who continue to threaten the society with violence. They should meet the full force of the law.

17: I thank the President for accepting the report of the Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy and granting pardon to over 150 Nigerians serving various terms of imprisonment. The more serious challenge is to immediately free all innocent Nigerians who are held captive and whose only crime is that they are living in Nigerians. With the news of the purchase of new sophisticated weapons, we hope that the President and the military will quickly roll out a strategy for routing this cancer that has afflicted our country. The general feeling is that the military has the capacity to end this tragedy. In reality, the military cannot fire beyond the radar set by their commander-in-chief. If the President can end this tragedy, he will immediately get the support of all citizens and hopefully leave office witih his head held high.

18: We cannot end this Message without sparing a thought for the untold sufferings being experienced by the people of Ukraine as a result of the invasion of their country by Russia. We turn in prayer to the Lord to touch the hearts and minds of those in power and in position to reverse this avoidable loss of human lives. May the spirit of the resurrected Christ and the appeals of all men and women of good will help to bring an end to this human tragedy.

19: Finally, in the last few years, my Messages have been borne out of a sense of moral revulsion over how life has been destroyed in my country. No country anywhere in the world is undergoing these self-inflicted wounds, citizens randomly murdering innocent citizens and getting away with it. For me as a Christian, there is a minimum threshold of human indignity that I can live with because the reason why Jesus came is so that all of us will have life and have it to the full (Jn. 10:10). We must shout at what diminishes any and every life in our society. Once human dignity is respected and restored, we will change our tone, but for now, our voice must have a sense of urgency. We Christians believe that to redeem the world, Christ allowed His body to be broken. We know He can heal out broken nation. May the light of His resurrection scatter the clouds and rout the men of evil, inspire a new birth in our dear nation and restore us to wholeness. A happy Easter to you all.
