‘Your victory has vindicated APC's nationalistic outlook and patriotic posture' – Adamu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, had said the ‘overwhelming’ votes received by the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, showed that the APC had a nationalistic disposition.

Adamu who stated this on Wednesday in a release issued by his media aide, Muhammed Lawal, in Abuja, congratulated the former Lagos State Governor.

Senator Adamu said he was pleased that the party spoke with one voice when the delegates voted overwhelmingly to nominate Tinubu as presidential candidate.

The statement read, “I write on behalf of the entire membership of the All Progressives Congress to congratulate Your Excellency on the sterling victory that you recorded at the just concluded Special National Convention to emerge as the presidential candidate of our great party.

"Your victory has vindicated our party’s nationalistic outlook and patriotic posture as the party of choice for every Nigerian.

“It is my sincere hope and prayer that our collaborative efforts between the party’s National Secretariat and your presidential campaign team will proceed with the shared expectations of victory at the 2023 general election, by the grace of God.”

Adamu had caused a stir on the eve of the convention when he took an unpopular decision by announcing the Senate President, Ahmed Law an as the party’s consensus presidential standard bearer.

He claimed that the choice of Lawan was decided after due consultation with the President Muhammadu Buhari.

But the announcement did not go down well with the NWC members as the likes of National Vice Chairman (North-West), Mallam Salihu Lukman, kicked against the decision, demanding that the party should give every aspirant a level playing ground.

‘Sex is more than just a pleasurable event' - Experts

What could make a man or woman begin a journey of sexual pleasure and never return alive? In this report, Primerosenews relives some past incidences, seeks answers to this germane question and possible causes.

ON Tuesday 17th of May, Nigerians woke to the horror news of an undergraduate student of Ibadan polytechnic who died during marathon sex with his lover.

It was reported that the young man lost his life while his female partner was rendered unconscious after the two reportedly had a long duration of sexual intercourse.

The deceased, a National Diploma 2 student identified only as Oromidayo, was from the Civil Engineering Department, while his lover, Aramide, is also in ND 2 level in the Department of Business Administration.

According to media reports, the two love birds had engaged in a sex romp after they came back from the campus. They were also suspected to have used drugs to enhance their sexual performance.

The deceased neighbour who spoke to the newsmen revealed that the lovers took sexual enhancement drug and began the ‘pleasure’ that landed the young man in the early grave and his lover in a coma.

On Sunday May 1, the residents of  Jakande Estate, Isolo, Lagos, also witnessed the unfortunate death of Koyejo who engaged in a car sex romp with her unnamed lover.

The neighbors discovered that the pair had died on Sunday May 1, after noticing that the car had been on all through Saturday night, April 30.

Koyejo, a married man, according to the media reports, had picked his ‘lover’ at Isolo while heading to his family house at Jakande Estate.

The IT engineer who lives with his wife at Surulere, reportedly called his friends to tell them he was around and subsequently bought suya before parking at Double Star Junction to have some fun inside the car.

A source said they became curious after discovering that his vehicle with registration number EPE666GE, had been on from Saturday night to Sunday night and in the same spot.

“By the time they put on their touch light, they saw it was Koyejo, our former guy. But we do not know who the girl was.

“It was this evening that we were told he went to pick the girl at Isolo. They bought suya at Moshalashi bus stop. One thing led to another and they started making love in the car.

“Nobody knows what killed them. Koyejo was naked while the girl only pulled her tight.

“One of the men in our zone called Koyejo”s wife who lives at Surulere. She said she had been unable to reach her husband since Saturday that his phone had been switched off.

“We had to contact policemen at Ejigbo who came to take them away with the car. Koyejo’s body had started peeling. The girl’s nose was bringing out blood.

“There was no injury on them.  Only the Police can tell what happened. They took them to Isolo General Hospital,” the source revealed.

The students and host community of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, capital of Imo State Nigeria, will also not forget in a hurry when, Cynthia Obieshi and Samuel Osuji that also started a journey of sexual pleasure on June 14, 2020, never returned alive.

The then police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Okeokwu, said, “On Sunday, June 14, 2020, acting on a report received at the police station, operatives of the Divisional Police Headquarters, Nekede/Ihiagwa Division, moved to Room 19, Vic-Mic Lodge, situated around the JMJ bus stop, broke into the room and found the lifeless bodies of one Cynthia Obieshi and one Samuel Osuji.

“It was gathered that the said Cynthia visited her boyfriend, Samuel on June 13, 2020, and passed the night with him, but unfortunately, both of them could not wake up the next morning.

Also in Adamawa State, North-Eastern Nigeria, where Lugas, a 37-year-old mother of two children also died during sexual intercourse with his lover, Lekan Agboola.

Agboola, a telecommunication engineer whose wife and children are in Lagos, said Lugas had been his girlfriend for more than three years, before the unfortunate incident occurred.

Recounting the circumstances surrounding the death of his partner, Agboola said he called the late Lugas to meet him at home and it was while they were having sex that he noticed she suddenly became stiff.

Medical experts’ perspective

Two medical practitioners spoken to, confirmed it in separate interviews, the possibility of death to occur during consensual sex for a number of reasons, generally because of the physical strain of the activity, or because of unusual extenuating circumstances.

Speaking on factors that can lead to death during sex, a medical doctor at Eket General Hospital, Akwai-Ibom State, Dr Sylvanus Edet described sex as an energy sapping activity that could lead to death if there is underlying health challenges or either of the partners is not in a stable health condition.

He blamed some recorded incidents of death on sexual enhancers, which their users hardly bother about their negative consequences.

As an African, he believes thunderbolt which Yoruba extraction called Magun, but he argued that thunderbolt does not take the life of its victim until when such victim eat, drink or do the forbidden.

“Sex is an energy sapping activity. Some die as a result of engaging in the act despite their unstable health condition, to satisfy their lust and some take sexual enhancements to go extra miles to satisfy their partners without minding the danger attached to it,” he stressed.

Also speaking, Dr Olugbenga Alabi of General Hospital, Abeokuta, Ogun State, who was in the same page with Dr. Edet, stressed that as much as sex is a pleasurable activity, it is also an activity that consumes a lot of energy.

Alabi described the general belief that sex is a mere pleasurable event that requires no energy, as being far from the truth.

He explained that Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (ATP) otherwise known as the energy currency of the body, consumed during sexual intercourse, especially during orgasm is very high.

According to him, “Death during sex is more common with patients that have background of certain illnesses, and the commonest in this part of the world is cardiovascular diseases; hypertension and diabetes.

“They can be predisposed to death during sexual intercourse. It’s commoner with men than women because, according to the orgasm ladder, men reach orgasm faster than women. A woman may just be in stage 2 during sex while a man may have reached stage 5 and come back to zero.

“The commonest cause of death during sexual intercourse is patient having subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). It’s a form of stroke and also a form of blood vessel taking blood to brain bursting during sex,” he stated.

Stressed further, Dr. Alabi said, “We have cases like that of people who were rushed to the hospital. If they are rushed to the hospital on time, they may still survive but if not, it’s something very lethal.

The medical expert also noted that the life of a patient suffering from Myocardial infarction (MI), which is commonly known as heart attack, could be cut short while having marathon sex.

“During sex, all the body parts and soul are involved. It’s not only the body; the soul must also be ready to do it. So when all those things come to play, there is increased consumption of energy.”

He said inadequate supply of nutrients, energy and oxygen to the heart to compensate for what it’s doing, can make it suffer an attack, which may be very lethal.

According to him, Myocardial Infarction (MI) patients are restrained from having sex for at least two weeks in some developed countries like United Kingdom, UK, saying such may not be easily recommended in Nigeria because of government’s poor policy on health conditions.

 Physical fitness helps

The duo of Dr.  Edet and Dr. Alabi recommend regular exercise to both male and female to stay fit and avoid complications that may arise during sexual intercourse.

According to the medical experts, having sex uses a lot of muscles that one doesn’t normally use during the course of the day, especially during ejaculation which is the peak of sex.

“When you are having sex, the exercise you do is greater than running a 400-metre race, so if you don’t engage in a regular exercise, that may pose a danger,”  Dr. Edet affirmed.

The medical doctors encouraged all to avoid living a life devoid of physical activity.

“It’s important to engage in enough physical exercise; not necessarily jumping or going to the gym every day, but taking at least 10-20minutes walk daily,” Alabi said.

He added: “Sex and death, the commonest problem still remain with the heart or its vessels. Other things may not even give you enough energy to do it. A patient that has obtrusive airwaves problem will not have enough strength to engage in aggressive sexual intercourse.

“It also depends on the sex position they engage in. There are some sex positions that won’t consume much energy and there are other sex positions that require much energy.”

Age also matters in sex

Dr Alabi also says age remain a non modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

According to him, “When we say risk factor, in some non communicable diseases, there are no definite causes for it. Majority of people with hypertension don’t have a major cause, we only know that there are risk factors like, obesity, smoking, taking excessive alcohol, excessive cholesterol; being a black is also a risk factor for hypertension. There are other factors like genetic diseases, family history of hypertension, family history of diabetes that is risk factors for the cardiovascular diseases.

“Of all the above factors, some are modifiable and some are non-modifiable. So anyone with family history of diabetes or hypertension, from age 55 has three risk factors combined because he can’t change his family, can’t change his race as black and can’t also reduce his age. These are non-modifiable risk factors.”

He explained further, “As we grow older, we are like vehicle, our body parts wear and tear but unfortunately we can’t replace them. As far as cardiovascular diseases are concerned, the older one gets, the more the risk factors.

“When some older women come to the hospital and complain that they are having irregular menstruation, I welcome them to the male club. Being a man is a factor for hypertension, so by the time women attain menopause, they are also prone to hypertension.”

Sexual enhancement a fatal decision

The dangers lurking for users of sexual enhancement pills, according to Doctor Alabi, are more fatal than beneficial.

Rather than taking enhancement to boost sexual performance, Alabi advised that the one who suffers erectile dysfunction could take proper stalk of history to pick a cause of the problem.

He warned that people should desist from taking sexual enhancement, especially the unorthodox ones that have no regulated dosage, as they could be rendered permanently impotent.

“There are two types of erectile dysfunction (ED): psychogenic and neurogenic. Psychogenic is just like psychy. A man who fought with his wife at home may not have sexual urge for that woman until they resolve the fight. That is psychogenic. Some may be caused by systemic disease like diabetes and by the time you’re treating them and controlling sugar in them, their penile erection too will start improving.”

“I won’t mention those things people are taking; however, though it may give them some aphrodisiac effect, the side effect is not usually too good. For instance, if someone has persistent penile erection that lasts for more than four hours and there is no medical intervention, it can render the victim permanently impotent.

"In the pathogenesis of penile erection, the major thing is the blood vessel in the penis will dilate, it will enlarge so that the blood will flow. When blood flows in and it does not flow out, that penis remain turgid. But God has made that system a form of ying yang, such that when you need to have sex, it rises and when you finish the operation, the verve opens and the blood moves out. But in all those enhancement, especially the unorthodox ones, they don’t have that check verves.”

“Even with our orthodox drugs that we give patients, there is improvement everyday as to reducing other side effect that can arise from it. Some years back, there was a drug called Viagra, but today there is another brand that has some advantages over the first brand,” he cautioned.

Traditionalists’ corner

Corroborating the above views of medical experts, a roots and herbs seller, Morufat Ojo said, if anybody slumps and dies during sex, such person may have a history of sickness such as hypertension or diabetes; or as a result of sexual enhancement many are fond of taking.

Ojo claimed that if anyone comes for erectile dysfunction solution or roots and herbs for sexual enhancement, she always tries to find out the cause of such problem before giving the patient herbs for sexual performance.

“Some people are suffering from erectile dysfunction ED as a result of pile; some are going through both physical and emotional stress, so we ask all that.”

“Like in the hospital where the doctor will carry out tests on a patient to ascertain the causes of sickness in the body, we ask them all that too. Some are diabetic and some are hypertensive and if we confirm any of these, we first treat them on those sicknesses before giving them sexual enhancers,” she submitted.

Erubami Ifayemi, an Ifa priest, however, has a divergent opinion on death during sex. To him it’s not enough for anyone to die during sexual intercourse on account of health challenge.

Ifayemi believed that those that died during the actions are either victims of  thunderbolt or the women they have sex with failed to bear certain sacrifice to appease the spirit world.

But thunderbolt does not kill its victim immediately until the man eats, drinks or does the forbidden, Primerosenews inquired.

Ifayemi however thundered that, “There are many types of thunderbolt; some kill only when you do the forbidden and some kill immediately. There are some that the victim would be getting lean and doctor would not be able to discover the problem in him.

“So in a nutshell, there is nothing that can make a man that has erection to start a journey of sexual pleasure and die on the way, there must be something somewhere, hidden in the woman’s body,” he believed.

Comments on Buhari: 'Tinubu didn’t say anything new' – Magnus Abe

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress and former senator represented Rivers South-East district in the senate, Magnus Abe has described the comments made by presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu about President Mohammadu Buhari as a statement of fact that no one can deny.

Reacting to the outburst in a statement signed by his (Abe) spokesperson, Parry Saroh Benson, Abe maintained that there is nothing new or different about the statement, which has been publicly admitted by the president himself.

The statement quoted Abe as saying, “It is no longer news to all genuine lovers of the APC, that the past seven years have witnessed all sorts of evil plots by desperate politicians to destroy the fabric of unity between President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“He did not say anything new, which Nigerians do not know. So, the politically contrived hue and cry about the factual statement is to create disunity between both leaders in order to promote their plots to upstage Asiwaju and destroy him in a classic ‘use and dump fashion’.

“I appeal to all members of our great party, the APC, to disregard the innuendos aimed at painting Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in bad light as, in the minds of the plotters, there is nothing he will do that will not attract condemnation.

“Delegates should focus on their future, the future of the country and our Party, and ignore these chameleons and wolves in sheep’s clothing; Asiwaju we know and Asiwaju we shall follow.

“Therefore, I urge all party faithful to be firm, especially delegates and be committed to the success of our party,” the statement concluded.

Tinubu had caused a stir on Thursday when he claimed that without him, Buhari would not have become the president in 2015.

The APC national leader made the statement at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, when he was addressing the APC delegates ahead of the party’s primary.

‘Abiodun never issued any statement in response to Tinubu's statement’ – Ogun govt

The Ogun State Government has debunked that a social media post by Governor Dapo Abiodun was not a reaction to the statement made by the National Leader and presidential aspirant of All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, during his recent visit to party delegates in the state.

A statement that surfaced on Governor Abiodun’s social media pages on Friday morning stating, “I am not an emperor by any chance and this is not my family inheritance.

“I am holding this position in trust for all the people of this state and I have vowed to be fair, just and equitable and this is the solemn agreement I made between the Almighty God and myself.”

In a swift reaction to some media outlet publications that Governor Abiodun’s post in targeted against Tinubu's statement, the Ogun State Government said the post was not directed at the APC stalwart.

The statement released on Friday night, titled, ‘Governor Abiodun never issued any statement in response to Asiwaju Tinubu —Ogun Govt’ was signed by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Abdulwaheed Odusile.

The statement read, “The attention of the Ogun State Government has been drawn to comments purportedly made by Governor Dapo Abiodun in reaction to statements made by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and presidential hopeful, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during his recent visit to party delegates in the state.

For the avoidance of doubt, the tweet released this morning was an extract to re-emphasise the comments of Governor Abiodun to party faithfuls and appointees on May 29 during the celebration of his third year in office, which also coincided with his 62nd birthday.

“The comments could, therefore, not have been a response to comments by Asiwaju Tinubu whose visits to Abeokuta came five days later.

“While Governor Abiodun appreciates the media, including online platforms, as partners in progress with Government, he enjoins media practitioners to always report the truth at all times and refrain from giving vent to fake news, distortions and misinterpretations.”

The APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday in Abeokuta, said he expected that those he “helped” should support his 2023 presidential ambition.

The former Lagos State governor listed Dapo Abiodun as one of the beneficiaries of his political powers, saying “Dapo that’s sitting down here, could he have become Governor without me.

“We were at the stadium; they tore all his posters. Even the party flag, they didn’t want to hand over it to him. I was the one who brought it. If he wants to meet God at the right place, he must know that without God and me, he would not have become Governor.”

The governor had earlier endorsed the candidacy of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for the 2023 presidency.

South-West presidential aspirants meet tonight

Ahead of Monday presidential primaries, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential aspirants from the South-West region are expected to hold a final meeting this Saturday in Abuja.

The seven presidential aspirants from the region are Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; APC national leader, Bola Tinubu; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun; Deputy Majority Leader of the Senate, Ajayi Boroffice; a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; and Lagos cleric, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

Also expected at the meeting are APC governors from South-West which include; Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo).

Other stakeholders expected to attend the meeting scheduled to hold by 8 p.m tonight at the Abuja home of Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, are some South-West extraction federal ministers.

Reliable sources told THE PUNCH that the discussion would border on South-West unity and reach a possible consenPUNC

One of the aspirants, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealed that, “We will all be meeting at Chief Osoba’s home by 8pm in Abuja. Everyone is expected to be present. We will all sit together and discuss the need to ensure that the South-West gets the ticket.

“However, all of us will be asked to be truthful with one another and see who among us has the best chance of winning the primary. Then if anyone is willing to step down to boost the chances of the South-West, then this will be encouraged.”

It was gathered on Friday that intense lobbying by some northern governors to ensure that the APC gives its presidential ticket to a northerner had unsettled the South-West bloc of the party.

This was said to have caused Tinubu’s outburst at a meeting with Ogun State delegates on Thursday, where he insisted that the APC must give its ticket to a Yoruba man and that he must be the favoured candidate.

When women embrace changes and rule their world

It’s a changing world and women in Nigeria and across the globe are embracing the change as it comes. This is especially so in the area of job choices, as the female folks hitherto referred to as the weaker sex are braving the odds and encroaching into areas formerly thought to be the preserves of men. Primerosenews, who encountered some of these women reports:

The emergence of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Joyce Benda as presidents of Liberia and Malawi respectively shows that societies are changing.

Just last week, a female senator of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs Aishatu Binani emerged the All Progressives Congress,  (APC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State for the 2023 general elections. If Mrs Binani polled the two-third majority votes of people of Adamawa State in 2023, she will become the first substantive female governor in Nigeria.

Also, the arrival of Dr (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in 2021 as the current Director General of World Trade Organisation (WTO) is another great feat among women, that showed that they are transiting from weaker sex to energetic and unwavering sex.

The place of Kafaya Sani can never be empty as she became first female fighter pilot at age of 22 years in the 55 years history of Nigerian Airforce.

Apart from being a first woman to go through regular combat training at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to be winged for a fixed-wing fighter aircraft, Sanni has also trained in the US and was named the overall best pilot at the NAF 401 Flying Training School, Kaduna State, in 2017.

“It was what I wanted to do. And I felt that everyone is not supposed to fold their arms and watch what is happening in our country. Everyone could always play their part.

“So, I did not think there was any reason for me to think that it is not possible for me to actually fly the jet because there was no female that ever flew the jet. I believe I could achieve it and I did. It is a privilege for me to be winged as the first female fighter pilot in the Nigerian Air Force,” she had said

African women are increasingly able to brave the odds and choose and chart a course for themselves. Hence, it is no longer uncommon to find women running successful businesses across Nigeria and the continent, even encroaching on areas traditionally reserved for men. These set of women are gladly embracing new challenges, asserting their freedom and etching their names on crucibles.

Four of such Nigerian women share their story of determination, inspiration and challenges with Primerosenews, in disciplines rarely travelled by their fellow women.

Iyabo John,  the injector pump technician.

It was a sunny Tuesday, the middle-age  fair-complexioned Evelyn clad in a white overall jacket. She was  armed with a big hammer and bent-over an injector, she seemed lost in her world and it took nearly an eternity for her to mutter a reply of ‘welcome;’ even as she immediately returned her intention to the job at hand.

One could easily tell that it was one of those busy afternoons. But finally she lifted her head, and indicated her readiness to give an audience.

Her name is Iyabo John and she is Public Relations Officer, Fuel Injector Pump and Technicians Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter. She spoke of how her strong desire to become an Injector pump technician came alive in her secondary school days in the early 80s, when she went to visit her sister who worked as a Ticket seller with the defunct Lagos State Transport Company, LSTC at their workshop. She never forgot that encounter; and it was like a dream come true in 1985, when after completing her Senior School Certificate Examination at Maryland Comprehensive High School, Maryland, Lagos, she met Uncle Larry, the man who was to become her trainer and boss. Uncle Larry had just returned to Nigeria to establish an Injector Pump Workshop in Lagos after completing his studies in Mechanical Engineering in the United State of America.

Now fully matured, having gained independence a long time ago and ventured into her own practice, Iyabo rules her own world. “I have been in this profession for over twenty years, and I’m glad I visited my sister in her workshop that day. I’m also glad I met my boss, Uncle Larry.”

Mrs John revealed that customers are comfortable with her work and easily entrust her with their vehicles. As a matter of fact, she said customers in her line of work prefer women because women are more trustworthy than men. More so, she said customers don’t doubt the quality and authenticity of her work.

“Compared to the men, the number of women doing this work is minimal. But the reason vehicle owners are patronizing women is because women are honest with whatever is entrusted in their care.”

But does her husband support her career? We asked.

To this she gave an answer that seemed self-sufficient. “My husband is a transporter.” She explained that the fact that they operate in a related field, means he understands her job and thus avails her, his sincere support.

On the challenges facing the profession, Iyabo berated the insincere attitude of petroleum marketers, who convey different petroleum products with the same tankers. She said “The mixtures of these products pose a great danger to our work, as some simple problems defy simple solution, mainly because wrong formula of oil has been used on the engines.”

Another challenge for her, especially as a lady is the constant pressure from the opposite sex. She agrees that she cannot rule this out since she deals mainly with men, but said she has an antidote. “If a customer brings work with a mind of dating, I will collect the work and tell him to hold on to the love matter because that work remains my first constituency.”

She however said working for men is full of fun compared to women, especially when it comes to money issue.

On her memorable experiences on the job, Iyabo’s face lightened up, a smile creeping up, and then an excited laughter. “My happiest moment on this job is usually when an apprentice is graduating and I see my colleagues on the high table, with my humble self amongst them. It gives me a sense of fulfillment to see that I am also turning out experts in the profession. On such days, I’m always full of praises and appreciation to God.”

She however said that her low moment is when business is low and there are no vehicles to work on.

To her fellow women, Iyabo offers a message of hope and upliftment. They should brace up and battle the economic tide that is turning against everybody and support their husbands, since according to her, “it is a group of trees that makes a forest.”

Bunmi Akinde, apprentice motorcycle mechanic/repairer.

Bunmi Akinde is a 19 year-old Senior Secondary School graduate of Queen Unique College, Sango-Ota. To some members of her family, Bunmi’s case could be likened to someone who had suddenly come under a spell, when she got up one day and told her mother that she wanted to learn motorcycle mechanic/repair. The situation was a bit worrisome, but she was then being persuaded by her mother, who runs a food canteen, to go to school.

But Bunmi insisted that she would go to school under her own terms, and that would be after she had learnt the job of her choice, because of her burning passion for it.

“I left college with nine credits. The grades qualified me to seek admission into any tertiary institution of my choice in Nigeria, so it was not a case of not having anything else to do. I just had this passion for the mechanic profession, even though it is heavily dominated by men. So I decided to go into it and afterward go back to school to study a related course in Engineering.

“I am the first child of only two girls of my parents; I lost my father while I was in secondary school. However, my mother could still have been able to meet my demands if I wanted to go to school, but I want to study with my own money, made through this job.”

Miss Akinde recalled the many barriers she had to scale in her quest to go after her passion. “When I decided to learn the work, my mother did not give me food for two weeks. She called a family meeting on me. Many of the family members thought I was insane for choosing such a profession. Where on earth do women learn motorcycle repair? They wondered. They threatened to disown me as their child. But I didn’t allow that to dampen my spirit. I hope to be able to have a big workshop that’ll surpass those of my male colleagues in the profession someday. I want to prove to the whole world that what a man can do, a woman can do it better. This is my aspiration going into the future.

Asked if she is proud of the job, considering that it is not a job for ladies, Bunmi cuts in, “Yes, I am very proud of what I’m doing. I don’t feel shy. I mostly wear my workshop dress around, no matter the places they send me to; even if I am going to the bank. And I hardly have time for any other thing. That is why I cut my hair.”

Like Iyabo John, Bunmi disclosed that her biggest challenge is contending with pressure from men. “I am working for men, and many of them come and say they want to marry me even at my age, but I know that most of them only want to take advantage of me to satisfy their sexual urge and I don’t have time for that. But there is a way to handle that, so I don’t chase away our customers. Although many of them confess their attraction to me, I can tell that they actually patronize our workshop because of the quality of work that we do for them.”

While this interview was going on, Bunmi’s boss, Clement Kindjiku from Republic of Benin, who had been following our interaction with rapt attention affirmed that the coming of Bunmi to his workshop has been a great blessing to his business. He said her presence as a pretty young girl has brought a large number of customers in their tens.

But Kindjiku insists that she is not all about pretty face: “Bunmi is also very hardworking, honest and a committed apprentice who has sight for the future. Some years ago, she used to come visiting at my workshop after school hours. She would be looking at us with keen admiration and telling me that she loved the job and would like to learn it. But I thought she was kidding and never took her seriously. One day, after she had completed her Senior School Certificate Examination SSCE, she came to me and said she wanted to learn Mechanic. To say the least, I was utterly surprised, but still didn’t take her seriously. Later I told her that if it came from her mind to learn the work, then she should come and resume. I however warned her that I wouldn’t welcome any kind of insolence or misbehaviour. But she went ahead and resumed all the same. To my greatest surprise, she became committed and has taken the work seriously ever since. It’s been too years today and I have never had any cause to regret taking her in.

Abiodun Sofolabo,  a  hairstylist turned bus conductor

Abiodun is a single mother of three and a hair stylist-turned bus conductor. After her shop at Ebutte-Metta area of Lagos was demolished by government some years back and her marriage was also crashed, Abiodun was left all alone, without any helper or means of living. Although both her parents who work with Federal  Bureau of Statistics in Abuja could have set her up in business again, Abiodun would rather embrace what she termed ‘operation work your fingers to the bone.’

“I am a hair stylist by profession, but the government demolished my shop in Ebutte-metta some years ago and I was left with nothing. Soon after, my marriage also crashed. Although I have SSCE, but which work will that certificate fetch me? The income would not be enough to take care of my needs. Somehow, I leant that this one (bus conductor job) fetches a reasonable daily income, so I jumped at it.”

And now we asked her how she copes with the street urchins otherwise known as “Area boys” at motor parks and bus stops. We also wanted to know how she copes with insulting words from aggressive passengers.

But Abiodun says she endures them all because she has no other means of livelihood. “I have no choice, I endure it all. Although when we were using Federal Government Assisted Transits bus, popularly known as “Blue Bus,” we had no problem of Area Boys. But now that they have been painted into Lagos commercial transport colour, our work has taken another dimension. In a day, we spend more than N11, 000 paying Area Boys at terminals. As for the passengers, I know where I’m coming from and I know where I am going. Mostly I don’t respond to them (passengers); but some of them do talk to gain relevance, and I don’t hesitate to give it to such people the way they want it. As conductors, we get a lot of insulting words and embarrassment from area boys and passengers, but since I have no other way for now, I endure it all,” she reiterated.

Asked if she ever feels ashamed of the job, being a woman, Abiodun responded gleefully that she is very proud of her work, more especially because of what she has achieved through it. She quickly added that she has never regretted doing the job.

“I am proud of the work because I know how much I make in a day and I know what I do with the money. Even if I stop today, I have enough to invest in another business of my choice.

Before the face-off between the Federal and State Governments that led all transport operators to paint their buses into Lagos colour, most conductors used to take home between N7,000.00 and N10,000.00 at the end of every working day,” she revealed.

Maryam Muili- Commercial tricyclist.

Maryam’s venture into the commercial tricycle world was borne out of necessity. Following her Senior School Certificate Examination at Mufu Laniwun College, Ibadan, she proceeded to study Fashion Design. On graduating few years back however, she had nobody to set her up in business and was therefore forced to design a new and vibrant way of meeting her life challenges.

“After my freedom in 2011, there was nobody to rent a shop for me and buy the tools which the job requires for me and I didn’t want to become an extra burden to my parents. Besides, I knew that setting me up was beyond their capacity. So, I came to Lagos to face the reality of life.

“On getting to Lagos, I worked as a salesgirl at a fabrics store at Oshodi, but when the salary there could not even take care of my immediate needs, let alone have any left-over to save towards my fashion business, I took a decision to quit. I went into hawking of Agbo (herbal mixture) at Ketu, Oshodi and Ikorodu. With my daily savings from that venture, I was able to rent a room at Ikorodu and began living a life of relative comfort.

“One day, I was hawking Agbo when I saw a lady riding a tricycle. I found it very fascinating and approached her to train me on how to ride it. Fortunately for me, she did not object to the idea, and within one week, I’d become an expert.”

“So,” she said beaming, “that is the short story of how I became a tricycle rider. I started about three years ago at Ikorodu, before moving over to Abule-Egba.”

Asked to comment on the profitability of the job, considering that she operates on Abule-Egba-Oke Aro axis, notorious for its bad roads, Muili said it is a profitable job, depending on how hardworking and committed one is.

“Riding between Abule-Egba and Oke Aro is a good place to do the job, although the road is bad and I often returned home with pains all over my body.”

She revealed that “A micro finance bank bought the tricycle for us and we pay N25, 000 instalmentally every week. So at the end of each day’s work, I save N5000.00 for that purpose, which comes to N30000.00 every week,  from Monday to Saturday. After paying the N25,000.00 installment, I keep the remaining N5000.00 for any unforeseen occurrences, like servicing the tricycle. I take the weekly installment and maintenance very seriously because if one fails to pay the installment levy for two weeks, the bank will confiscate the tricycle. So I don’t ever want any situation where the tricycle will be faulty and I will not get money to repair it. So the extra N5000 takes care of that.”

A mild drama however unfolded when Primerosenews asked her if she is proud of what she is doing. Marian stared back for almost an eternity and then told us to ask another question, saying “I don’t know how to answer that question.”

Probed further, she sort of brightened up and said: “I am proud of it”.

But would she consider another line of work, something less strenuous but with prospect of more money?

Of course yes, she answered in the affirmative. “What I will not consider is a job that is difficult and yet comes with lower income. My pastor tells me to continue with the work and that I will one day encounter divine favour on it.”

She also said she has never regretted venturing into the job, because it fetches her daily income with which she meets her daily needs.

Is she married or engaged we asked, and how will her husband or fiancé feel if he sees her at work, calling out to passengers and generally tussling it out with her male counterparts in the profession?

First she said she is not married, but has a fiancĂ©. And then she said “I didn’t tell him initially, because we didn’t see each other often; but when he finally got to know, all he asked was if it was convenient for me. I told him every other thing he needed to know about the job, and being a mechanic himself, he didn’t object.”

She reveals that she manages men’s overtures on the job by being constantly jovial and friendly.

“I am naturally a very lively person; so if any man tells me about love, I simply turn it into a joke. This happens regularly with male riders, with whom I play, eat and also drink; but I simply tell them that I’m their younger sister and that their responsibility should be to guide me aright, rather than mislead me into promiscuity.”

On the emerging tendency of women to encroach on professions hitherto seen as preserves of men, Marian says “The world is changing and it is no longer a place where men are seen as demi-gods to their women counterparts. She condemned a situation where some women still rely totally on their husbands, saying this is a recipe for promiscuity or prostitution, especially if the husband is suddenly not able to fulfill his obligations.
