Comments on Buhari: 'Tinubu didn’t say anything new' – Magnus Abe

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress and former senator represented Rivers South-East district in the senate, Magnus Abe has described the comments made by presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu about President Mohammadu Buhari as a statement of fact that no one can deny.

Reacting to the outburst in a statement signed by his (Abe) spokesperson, Parry Saroh Benson, Abe maintained that there is nothing new or different about the statement, which has been publicly admitted by the president himself.

The statement quoted Abe as saying, “It is no longer news to all genuine lovers of the APC, that the past seven years have witnessed all sorts of evil plots by desperate politicians to destroy the fabric of unity between President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“He did not say anything new, which Nigerians do not know. So, the politically contrived hue and cry about the factual statement is to create disunity between both leaders in order to promote their plots to upstage Asiwaju and destroy him in a classic ‘use and dump fashion’.

“I appeal to all members of our great party, the APC, to disregard the innuendos aimed at painting Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in bad light as, in the minds of the plotters, there is nothing he will do that will not attract condemnation.

“Delegates should focus on their future, the future of the country and our Party, and ignore these chameleons and wolves in sheep’s clothing; Asiwaju we know and Asiwaju we shall follow.

“Therefore, I urge all party faithful to be firm, especially delegates and be committed to the success of our party,” the statement concluded.

Tinubu had caused a stir on Thursday when he claimed that without him, Buhari would not have become the president in 2015.

The APC national leader made the statement at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, when he was addressing the APC delegates ahead of the party’s primary.

‘Abiodun never issued any statement in response to Tinubu's statement’ – Ogun govt

The Ogun State Government has debunked that a social media post by Governor Dapo Abiodun was not a reaction to the statement made by the National Leader and presidential aspirant of All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, during his recent visit to party delegates in the state.

A statement that surfaced on Governor Abiodun’s social media pages on Friday morning stating, “I am not an emperor by any chance and this is not my family inheritance.

“I am holding this position in trust for all the people of this state and I have vowed to be fair, just and equitable and this is the solemn agreement I made between the Almighty God and myself.”

In a swift reaction to some media outlet publications that Governor Abiodun’s post in targeted against Tinubu's statement, the Ogun State Government said the post was not directed at the APC stalwart.

The statement released on Friday night, titled, ‘Governor Abiodun never issued any statement in response to Asiwaju Tinubu —Ogun Govt’ was signed by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Abdulwaheed Odusile.

The statement read, “The attention of the Ogun State Government has been drawn to comments purportedly made by Governor Dapo Abiodun in reaction to statements made by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and presidential hopeful, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during his recent visit to party delegates in the state.

For the avoidance of doubt, the tweet released this morning was an extract to re-emphasise the comments of Governor Abiodun to party faithfuls and appointees on May 29 during the celebration of his third year in office, which also coincided with his 62nd birthday.

“The comments could, therefore, not have been a response to comments by Asiwaju Tinubu whose visits to Abeokuta came five days later.

“While Governor Abiodun appreciates the media, including online platforms, as partners in progress with Government, he enjoins media practitioners to always report the truth at all times and refrain from giving vent to fake news, distortions and misinterpretations.”

The APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday in Abeokuta, said he expected that those he “helped” should support his 2023 presidential ambition.

The former Lagos State governor listed Dapo Abiodun as one of the beneficiaries of his political powers, saying “Dapo that’s sitting down here, could he have become Governor without me.

“We were at the stadium; they tore all his posters. Even the party flag, they didn’t want to hand over it to him. I was the one who brought it. If he wants to meet God at the right place, he must know that without God and me, he would not have become Governor.”

The governor had earlier endorsed the candidacy of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for the 2023 presidency.

South-West presidential aspirants meet tonight

Ahead of Monday presidential primaries, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential aspirants from the South-West region are expected to hold a final meeting this Saturday in Abuja.

The seven presidential aspirants from the region are Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; APC national leader, Bola Tinubu; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State; former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun; Deputy Majority Leader of the Senate, Ajayi Boroffice; a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; and Lagos cleric, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

Also expected at the meeting are APC governors from South-West which include; Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo).

Other stakeholders expected to attend the meeting scheduled to hold by 8 p.m tonight at the Abuja home of Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, are some South-West extraction federal ministers.

Reliable sources told THE PUNCH that the discussion would border on South-West unity and reach a possible consenPUNC

One of the aspirants, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, revealed that, “We will all be meeting at Chief Osoba’s home by 8pm in Abuja. Everyone is expected to be present. We will all sit together and discuss the need to ensure that the South-West gets the ticket.

“However, all of us will be asked to be truthful with one another and see who among us has the best chance of winning the primary. Then if anyone is willing to step down to boost the chances of the South-West, then this will be encouraged.”

It was gathered on Friday that intense lobbying by some northern governors to ensure that the APC gives its presidential ticket to a northerner had unsettled the South-West bloc of the party.

This was said to have caused Tinubu’s outburst at a meeting with Ogun State delegates on Thursday, where he insisted that the APC must give its ticket to a Yoruba man and that he must be the favoured candidate.

When women embrace changes and rule their world

It’s a changing world and women in Nigeria and across the globe are embracing the change as it comes. This is especially so in the area of job choices, as the female folks hitherto referred to as the weaker sex are braving the odds and encroaching into areas formerly thought to be the preserves of men. Primerosenews, who encountered some of these women reports:

The emergence of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Joyce Benda as presidents of Liberia and Malawi respectively shows that societies are changing.

Just last week, a female senator of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs Aishatu Binani emerged the All Progressives Congress,  (APC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State for the 2023 general elections. If Mrs Binani polled the two-third majority votes of people of Adamawa State in 2023, she will become the first substantive female governor in Nigeria.

Also, the arrival of Dr (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in 2021 as the current Director General of World Trade Organisation (WTO) is another great feat among women, that showed that they are transiting from weaker sex to energetic and unwavering sex.

The place of Kafaya Sani can never be empty as she became first female fighter pilot at age of 22 years in the 55 years history of Nigerian Airforce.

Apart from being a first woman to go through regular combat training at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) to be winged for a fixed-wing fighter aircraft, Sanni has also trained in the US and was named the overall best pilot at the NAF 401 Flying Training School, Kaduna State, in 2017.

“It was what I wanted to do. And I felt that everyone is not supposed to fold their arms and watch what is happening in our country. Everyone could always play their part.

“So, I did not think there was any reason for me to think that it is not possible for me to actually fly the jet because there was no female that ever flew the jet. I believe I could achieve it and I did. It is a privilege for me to be winged as the first female fighter pilot in the Nigerian Air Force,” she had said

African women are increasingly able to brave the odds and choose and chart a course for themselves. Hence, it is no longer uncommon to find women running successful businesses across Nigeria and the continent, even encroaching on areas traditionally reserved for men. These set of women are gladly embracing new challenges, asserting their freedom and etching their names on crucibles.

Four of such Nigerian women share their story of determination, inspiration and challenges with Primerosenews, in disciplines rarely travelled by their fellow women.

Iyabo John,  the injector pump technician.

It was a sunny Tuesday, the middle-age  fair-complexioned Evelyn clad in a white overall jacket. She was  armed with a big hammer and bent-over an injector, she seemed lost in her world and it took nearly an eternity for her to mutter a reply of ‘welcome;’ even as she immediately returned her intention to the job at hand.

One could easily tell that it was one of those busy afternoons. But finally she lifted her head, and indicated her readiness to give an audience.

Her name is Iyabo John and she is Public Relations Officer, Fuel Injector Pump and Technicians Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter. She spoke of how her strong desire to become an Injector pump technician came alive in her secondary school days in the early 80s, when she went to visit her sister who worked as a Ticket seller with the defunct Lagos State Transport Company, LSTC at their workshop. She never forgot that encounter; and it was like a dream come true in 1985, when after completing her Senior School Certificate Examination at Maryland Comprehensive High School, Maryland, Lagos, she met Uncle Larry, the man who was to become her trainer and boss. Uncle Larry had just returned to Nigeria to establish an Injector Pump Workshop in Lagos after completing his studies in Mechanical Engineering in the United State of America.

Now fully matured, having gained independence a long time ago and ventured into her own practice, Iyabo rules her own world. “I have been in this profession for over twenty years, and I’m glad I visited my sister in her workshop that day. I’m also glad I met my boss, Uncle Larry.”

Mrs John revealed that customers are comfortable with her work and easily entrust her with their vehicles. As a matter of fact, she said customers in her line of work prefer women because women are more trustworthy than men. More so, she said customers don’t doubt the quality and authenticity of her work.

“Compared to the men, the number of women doing this work is minimal. But the reason vehicle owners are patronizing women is because women are honest with whatever is entrusted in their care.”

But does her husband support her career? We asked.

To this she gave an answer that seemed self-sufficient. “My husband is a transporter.” She explained that the fact that they operate in a related field, means he understands her job and thus avails her, his sincere support.

On the challenges facing the profession, Iyabo berated the insincere attitude of petroleum marketers, who convey different petroleum products with the same tankers. She said “The mixtures of these products pose a great danger to our work, as some simple problems defy simple solution, mainly because wrong formula of oil has been used on the engines.”

Another challenge for her, especially as a lady is the constant pressure from the opposite sex. She agrees that she cannot rule this out since she deals mainly with men, but said she has an antidote. “If a customer brings work with a mind of dating, I will collect the work and tell him to hold on to the love matter because that work remains my first constituency.”

She however said working for men is full of fun compared to women, especially when it comes to money issue.

On her memorable experiences on the job, Iyabo’s face lightened up, a smile creeping up, and then an excited laughter. “My happiest moment on this job is usually when an apprentice is graduating and I see my colleagues on the high table, with my humble self amongst them. It gives me a sense of fulfillment to see that I am also turning out experts in the profession. On such days, I’m always full of praises and appreciation to God.”

She however said that her low moment is when business is low and there are no vehicles to work on.

To her fellow women, Iyabo offers a message of hope and upliftment. They should brace up and battle the economic tide that is turning against everybody and support their husbands, since according to her, “it is a group of trees that makes a forest.”

Bunmi Akinde, apprentice motorcycle mechanic/repairer.

Bunmi Akinde is a 19 year-old Senior Secondary School graduate of Queen Unique College, Sango-Ota. To some members of her family, Bunmi’s case could be likened to someone who had suddenly come under a spell, when she got up one day and told her mother that she wanted to learn motorcycle mechanic/repair. The situation was a bit worrisome, but she was then being persuaded by her mother, who runs a food canteen, to go to school.

But Bunmi insisted that she would go to school under her own terms, and that would be after she had learnt the job of her choice, because of her burning passion for it.

“I left college with nine credits. The grades qualified me to seek admission into any tertiary institution of my choice in Nigeria, so it was not a case of not having anything else to do. I just had this passion for the mechanic profession, even though it is heavily dominated by men. So I decided to go into it and afterward go back to school to study a related course in Engineering.

“I am the first child of only two girls of my parents; I lost my father while I was in secondary school. However, my mother could still have been able to meet my demands if I wanted to go to school, but I want to study with my own money, made through this job.”

Miss Akinde recalled the many barriers she had to scale in her quest to go after her passion. “When I decided to learn the work, my mother did not give me food for two weeks. She called a family meeting on me. Many of the family members thought I was insane for choosing such a profession. Where on earth do women learn motorcycle repair? They wondered. They threatened to disown me as their child. But I didn’t allow that to dampen my spirit. I hope to be able to have a big workshop that’ll surpass those of my male colleagues in the profession someday. I want to prove to the whole world that what a man can do, a woman can do it better. This is my aspiration going into the future.

Asked if she is proud of the job, considering that it is not a job for ladies, Bunmi cuts in, “Yes, I am very proud of what I’m doing. I don’t feel shy. I mostly wear my workshop dress around, no matter the places they send me to; even if I am going to the bank. And I hardly have time for any other thing. That is why I cut my hair.”

Like Iyabo John, Bunmi disclosed that her biggest challenge is contending with pressure from men. “I am working for men, and many of them come and say they want to marry me even at my age, but I know that most of them only want to take advantage of me to satisfy their sexual urge and I don’t have time for that. But there is a way to handle that, so I don’t chase away our customers. Although many of them confess their attraction to me, I can tell that they actually patronize our workshop because of the quality of work that we do for them.”

While this interview was going on, Bunmi’s boss, Clement Kindjiku from Republic of Benin, who had been following our interaction with rapt attention affirmed that the coming of Bunmi to his workshop has been a great blessing to his business. He said her presence as a pretty young girl has brought a large number of customers in their tens.

But Kindjiku insists that she is not all about pretty face: “Bunmi is also very hardworking, honest and a committed apprentice who has sight for the future. Some years ago, she used to come visiting at my workshop after school hours. She would be looking at us with keen admiration and telling me that she loved the job and would like to learn it. But I thought she was kidding and never took her seriously. One day, after she had completed her Senior School Certificate Examination SSCE, she came to me and said she wanted to learn Mechanic. To say the least, I was utterly surprised, but still didn’t take her seriously. Later I told her that if it came from her mind to learn the work, then she should come and resume. I however warned her that I wouldn’t welcome any kind of insolence or misbehaviour. But she went ahead and resumed all the same. To my greatest surprise, she became committed and has taken the work seriously ever since. It’s been too years today and I have never had any cause to regret taking her in.

Abiodun Sofolabo,  a  hairstylist turned bus conductor

Abiodun is a single mother of three and a hair stylist-turned bus conductor. After her shop at Ebutte-Metta area of Lagos was demolished by government some years back and her marriage was also crashed, Abiodun was left all alone, without any helper or means of living. Although both her parents who work with Federal  Bureau of Statistics in Abuja could have set her up in business again, Abiodun would rather embrace what she termed ‘operation work your fingers to the bone.’

“I am a hair stylist by profession, but the government demolished my shop in Ebutte-metta some years ago and I was left with nothing. Soon after, my marriage also crashed. Although I have SSCE, but which work will that certificate fetch me? The income would not be enough to take care of my needs. Somehow, I leant that this one (bus conductor job) fetches a reasonable daily income, so I jumped at it.”

And now we asked her how she copes with the street urchins otherwise known as “Area boys” at motor parks and bus stops. We also wanted to know how she copes with insulting words from aggressive passengers.

But Abiodun says she endures them all because she has no other means of livelihood. “I have no choice, I endure it all. Although when we were using Federal Government Assisted Transits bus, popularly known as “Blue Bus,” we had no problem of Area Boys. But now that they have been painted into Lagos commercial transport colour, our work has taken another dimension. In a day, we spend more than N11, 000 paying Area Boys at terminals. As for the passengers, I know where I’m coming from and I know where I am going. Mostly I don’t respond to them (passengers); but some of them do talk to gain relevance, and I don’t hesitate to give it to such people the way they want it. As conductors, we get a lot of insulting words and embarrassment from area boys and passengers, but since I have no other way for now, I endure it all,” she reiterated.

Asked if she ever feels ashamed of the job, being a woman, Abiodun responded gleefully that she is very proud of her work, more especially because of what she has achieved through it. She quickly added that she has never regretted doing the job.

“I am proud of the work because I know how much I make in a day and I know what I do with the money. Even if I stop today, I have enough to invest in another business of my choice.

Before the face-off between the Federal and State Governments that led all transport operators to paint their buses into Lagos colour, most conductors used to take home between N7,000.00 and N10,000.00 at the end of every working day,” she revealed.

Maryam Muili- Commercial tricyclist.

Maryam’s venture into the commercial tricycle world was borne out of necessity. Following her Senior School Certificate Examination at Mufu Laniwun College, Ibadan, she proceeded to study Fashion Design. On graduating few years back however, she had nobody to set her up in business and was therefore forced to design a new and vibrant way of meeting her life challenges.

“After my freedom in 2011, there was nobody to rent a shop for me and buy the tools which the job requires for me and I didn’t want to become an extra burden to my parents. Besides, I knew that setting me up was beyond their capacity. So, I came to Lagos to face the reality of life.

“On getting to Lagos, I worked as a salesgirl at a fabrics store at Oshodi, but when the salary there could not even take care of my immediate needs, let alone have any left-over to save towards my fashion business, I took a decision to quit. I went into hawking of Agbo (herbal mixture) at Ketu, Oshodi and Ikorodu. With my daily savings from that venture, I was able to rent a room at Ikorodu and began living a life of relative comfort.

“One day, I was hawking Agbo when I saw a lady riding a tricycle. I found it very fascinating and approached her to train me on how to ride it. Fortunately for me, she did not object to the idea, and within one week, I’d become an expert.”

“So,” she said beaming, “that is the short story of how I became a tricycle rider. I started about three years ago at Ikorodu, before moving over to Abule-Egba.”

Asked to comment on the profitability of the job, considering that she operates on Abule-Egba-Oke Aro axis, notorious for its bad roads, Muili said it is a profitable job, depending on how hardworking and committed one is.

“Riding between Abule-Egba and Oke Aro is a good place to do the job, although the road is bad and I often returned home with pains all over my body.”

She revealed that “A micro finance bank bought the tricycle for us and we pay N25, 000 instalmentally every week. So at the end of each day’s work, I save N5000.00 for that purpose, which comes to N30000.00 every week,  from Monday to Saturday. After paying the N25,000.00 installment, I keep the remaining N5000.00 for any unforeseen occurrences, like servicing the tricycle. I take the weekly installment and maintenance very seriously because if one fails to pay the installment levy for two weeks, the bank will confiscate the tricycle. So I don’t ever want any situation where the tricycle will be faulty and I will not get money to repair it. So the extra N5000 takes care of that.”

A mild drama however unfolded when Primerosenews asked her if she is proud of what she is doing. Marian stared back for almost an eternity and then told us to ask another question, saying “I don’t know how to answer that question.”

Probed further, she sort of brightened up and said: “I am proud of it”.

But would she consider another line of work, something less strenuous but with prospect of more money?

Of course yes, she answered in the affirmative. “What I will not consider is a job that is difficult and yet comes with lower income. My pastor tells me to continue with the work and that I will one day encounter divine favour on it.”

She also said she has never regretted venturing into the job, because it fetches her daily income with which she meets her daily needs.

Is she married or engaged we asked, and how will her husband or fiancé feel if he sees her at work, calling out to passengers and generally tussling it out with her male counterparts in the profession?

First she said she is not married, but has a fiancé. And then she said “I didn’t tell him initially, because we didn’t see each other often; but when he finally got to know, all he asked was if it was convenient for me. I told him every other thing he needed to know about the job, and being a mechanic himself, he didn’t object.”

She reveals that she manages men’s overtures on the job by being constantly jovial and friendly.

“I am naturally a very lively person; so if any man tells me about love, I simply turn it into a joke. This happens regularly with male riders, with whom I play, eat and also drink; but I simply tell them that I’m their younger sister and that their responsibility should be to guide me aright, rather than mislead me into promiscuity.”

On the emerging tendency of women to encroach on professions hitherto seen as preserves of men, Marian says “The world is changing and it is no longer a place where men are seen as demi-gods to their women counterparts. She condemned a situation where some women still rely totally on their husbands, saying this is a recipe for promiscuity or prostitution, especially if the husband is suddenly not able to fulfill his obligations.

Atiku's candidacy: Ohaneze debunks remarks credited to it

The apex Igbo Socio-cultural Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has debunked the statement credited  to it that Atiku ‘’will never become Nigeria’s president”.

A statement by Ohanaeze spokesman, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, on Monday titled, ‘Ohanaeze Ndigbo debunks remarks on Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy,’ enjoined Nigerians to ignore it.

Ogbonnia noted that the purveyors of the report were “mischief makers, impostors, charlatans and unscrupulous social climbers who have shamelessly leeched on the invaluable footprints of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to issue press releases for narrow, perverse and illicit pecuniary interests”.

The statement partly read, “The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to a reckless publication currently circulating in the media indicating that Ohanaeze Ndigbo “blasts Atiku and vows to work against his PDP candidacy in the 2023 polls; and that Atiku Abubakar, will never become Nigeria’s president”.

“The release added that “the Igbo would rise up against Atiku, adding that his presidential campaign would be rejected in the South-East”.

‘’Ordinarily, Ohanaeze Ndigbo would have ignored the said press release, but silence in this circumstance will tend to give validity to such fallacy by the unsuspecting public. It is the unwholesome activities of such maladjusted, impish scaremongers that has been the bane to Igbo cohesion. For the avoidance of doubt, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, led by Ambassador Professor George Obiozor has not issued any press statement on the candidacy of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“Ohanaeze awaits with keen interest the full outcome of the ongoing primaries by all the political parties before it can issue a press release with respect to the Igbo position on the 2023 general election. We remind the general public that the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide is Ambassador Okey Emuchay, MFR and that any claim to the contrary is to say the least, devious and irresponsible,” the statement read.

Ekweremadu, Uzodimma meet Adamu at APC secretariat

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, on Monday, met with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Adamu.

THE PUNCH reported that the duo held a closed-door meeting for three hours with Adamu at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

Although Uzodimma disclosed after the meeting ended that he came to see his ‘friend’ for a tete-a-tete, many believed the meeting was to probably make a case for the embattled former deputy speaker.

The development was coming hours after Enugu State Chairman of the APC, Ugochukwu Agballah, rejected pleas by Ekweremadu to pick the governorship ticket of the party.

Agballah had described the lawmaker’s demand as “evil and repugnant.”

The APC chairman further warned that the party would not give Ekweremadu the governorship ticket because he was not from Enugu East District, where the party had zoned its governorship ticket.

Drama at APC presidential screening as supporters mob Tinubu

Commercial activities at the popular Transcorp Hilton were grounded on Monday following the arrival of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the party’s presidential screening.

The frontline presidential aspirant presence who stormed the venue of the APC screening at about 6:00 p.m with about a hundred of his supporters, gave many guests and officials tough times.

The shout of ‘Nigeria’s next president’ rented the hall as security officials struggled to contain the crowd.

The real drama, however, began when the restless supporters and praise singers held the former Lagos State governor hostage in the lift for almost 10 minutes.

It took the timely intervention of policemen to prevent the crowd from forcing their way into the lift.

Apart from Tinubu, other aspirants on the list of those to be screened include; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmed Lawan and former ministers Rotimi Amaechi, Ogbonnaya Onu, Godswill Akpabio, and Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Serving governors who are also listed for the screening are Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Ben Ayade (Cross River) and Badaru Abubakar ( Jigawa).

‘I was tempted to obstruct PDP presidential primary process’ – Wike

The Governor of Rivers State and presidential aspirant in the just concluded People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) presidential primary, Nyesom Wike has revealed how he was tempted to scuttle the process on Saturday.

He said this at a reception organised in his honour at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday, following his return from the party’s presidential primary in Abuja.

Wike said the temptation was exasperated by an aspirant who had spoken previously was allowed to return to the podium to pronounce his withdrawal, in contravention to the guidelines of the election.

The governor, however sued for peace among his supporters, describing his loss at the PDP presidential primary as the will of God.

Governor Wike said though he did not clinch the PDP Presidential ticket, he believes, just like his supporters, that his performance has raised the political profile of Rivers State and other minority groups in Nigeria.

“I have never seen how people can violate procedures and guidelines. Somebody has spoken, it is at that point he was speaking that he would have said I am withdrawing. You don’t call him back.

“Shame to those who will sell out their own, I have never seen a thing like that,” he stressed.

Oyegun chairs APC presidential screening exercise

Ahead of June 6th and 8th Presidential primaries, the governing party, All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced screening of 23 presidential aspirants on its platform.

According to reports, a former national chairman of the party, Chief Odigie John Oyegun, chaired the screening exercise.

Primerosenews had learnt that about 30 party men purchased the party’s presidential nomination and expression form,  but only 23 would be screened by the Oyegun-led Screening Committee.

The aspirants to be screened at the ongoing exercise include; Former Minister of State Education; Chukwuemeja Uwaezuoke Nwajiuba; Governor of Jigawa state, Badaru Abubakar; Senator Robert A. Boroffice; Barr. Uju Ken-Ohanenye (only female aspirant); Nicholas Felix; Ebonyi state governor; Nweze David Umahi; former senate president, and Ken Nnamani; Gbolahan B. Bakare.

The rest are; Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state; Tein Jack-Rich; former minister of science and technology, Christopher Onu; Senate president; Ahmad Lawan; Rivers state governor, Ben Ayade; and Ikeobasi Mokelu.

Nigerian economy can’t afford another ‘go slow'- Expert

A Development Consultant and Strategist, Dr Agu Ojukwu, has impressed on candidates seeking election into political offices in 2023 to rather bury  their aspirations if they do not have the needed economic blueprint to liberate Nigeria out of her current economic woe.

Addressing a press conference in Umuahia, Abia State capital, Ojukwu noted that Nigeria’s economy was bleeding profusely, and needed a quick fix, adding that the country cannot afford another ‘go slow economic drivers’, if it must survive.

The former Economic Adviser to ex-governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji appealed to aspirants and candidates seeking political offices in 2023 to seek to understand the mechanism for rapid economic development, saying the people have become impatient and will not tolerate any delay in improving their lives.

He said what Nigerians need is for aspirants and candidates to tell them how they will take them (Nigerians) to the future of their individual potentials.

The Expert lamented the precarious condition of the Nigeria economy, and said that only a visionary leader would navigate the country out of the woods.

He challenged incumbents to objectively appraise their performance so as to provide guide to their successors to know how to improve on their lapses.

Dr Ojukwu urged Nigerians to jettison primordial sentiments, party and religious affiliations, and vote for the most credible and competent candidates at the 2023 polls.

The Expert urged Nigerians to be careful of who to vote into power as the next President and Governors of various states considering the enormous role of the occupants of both seats in economic recovery and survival of any society.

The Development Consultant stressed that for the Nigeria economy to recover from its dangerous slope, caution must be exercised to ensure that only competent persons with proven track records were elected into power as President and Governors.

He cautioned the electorates against praise singing but challenged them to engage the aspirants and candidates in robust discussions of their agenda to revamp the failing economy.

Global warming may hinder longevity of flower life – Institute

The Kunming Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, had reported that a Chinese research team found that continued global warming may hamper floral life of plants.

Using published data on floral longevity from 818 angiosperm species, researchers from the institute presented the first global quantification of the latitudinal pattern of floral longevity and the relationships between floral longevity and a range of biotic and abiotic factors.

According to the study, the environmental temperature during the flowering season shows the highest influence on the longevity of flowers.

In areas of high temperature, drought, and strong solar radiation, plants tended to have shorter floral lives.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday reported that, continuous global warming and extreme high-temperature events may shorten the flower life of plants, and then aggravate the insufficient pollination of plants, resulting in changes in plant population or geographical distribution, said the study.

The research results provided a reference for the conservation of plant diversity under global climate change.

The study was recently published in the journal – New Phytologist.

Edo workers get N40,000 minimum wage

In fulfilment of the new minimum wage regime announced on Workers’ Day, Governor Godwin Obaseki has paid the Workers’ May salaries and pension, reflecting the new wage increase.

The Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, disclosed this via a statement issued on Thursday.

According to the statement, “The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has approved the payment of retirees’ pension and workers’ salaries for the month of May, reflecting the new N40,000 minimum wage.

“This is in fulfillment of the statutory obligations to workers and also a reflection of the governor’s expert and judicious management of the state’s resources,” the statement read in part.

Announcing the increment of minimum wage from N30,000 to N40,000 on May 1, governor Obaseki noted that the increase was necessary to help workers overcome the country’s overbearing economic challenges, which have caused galloping inflation among other socio-economic dislocations.

A cross-section of workers, who spoke with journalists after the payment of the new minimum wage, expressed excitement about the development, praising the governor for keeping to his word.

Alleged N96b fraud: ‘Supreme Court ruling vindicates my stance’ - Amaechi

The immediate past Minister of Transportation and former governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has disclosed that the Friday pronouncement of Supreme Court had further vindicated his stance that the investigation by the commission ought not to be portrayed as personal to him because he was not on trial.

He stated this on Friday while reacting to the judgement of the apex court which contained in a statement by his Media Office

According to the statement, “Nigeria’s apex court today ruled on the Appeal filed by Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi against the Rivers State Government on the Justice Omereji Judicial Commission of Inquiry.

“The Supreme Court in dismissing the appeal however pronounced that the function of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry was mere investigative, that nobody, neither Amaechi nor anyone else, was on trial before the panel.

“The Supreme Court ruling clearly vindicates the former Governor of Rivers State. The apex court was categorical and clear that Amaechi was not on trial. The implication of this is that any indictment from the Commission is null and void and cannot stand.

“With this judgment, Amaechi has been vindicated and cleared him of all purported or alleged indictment by the Governor Wike’s Commission.

“It has been further settled that the decisions/recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry and subsequent White Paper issued by the State Government is not a conviction or indictment and cannot stand.

“From the onset, it was obvious to any discerning mind that the Commission was set up to embarrass, denigrate and humiliate Amaechi.

“The apex court’s judgment today, further buttressed this stance. A commission purportedly set up to investigate past financial transactions was actually a commission to personally witch-hunt Amaechi.”

Upon assuming office in 2015, his successor and the incumbent governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Woke constituted the Justice George Omeregi-led judicial commission of inquiry to probe the alleged sale of state assets by the immediate past administration led by Amaechi.

Amaechi challenged the decision of the governor at High Court of Rivers State in a suit marked: PHC/187/15.

Delivering a judgment on August 20, 2015, Justice Simeon Amadi held among others that that the judicial commission of inquiry was not established to investigate the personal activities of the former governor, but set up to investigate the previous actions of the government as they affect the people of Rivers State.

On appeal, the Court of Appeal also expressed similar view, which was also reflected in the judgment of the Supreme Court on Friday.

In the lead judgment prepared by Justice Emmanuel Agim, but read by Justice Adamu Jauro, the court said:,”The gist of this decision is to the effect that the commission of inquiry was to investigate some transactions, hence no one was on trial, hence the issue of denial of fair hearing therefore, does not arise.”

The judgment also awarded N1million as cost against the appellant.

‘I’m not desperate to succeed Buhari’ - Obi

Hours after joining a  new party, former governor of Anambra State and presidential aspirant, Dr Peter Obi has revealed that he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s president  in 2023.

Obi who stated this while featuring on Channels TV programme on Friday night, Politics Today with Seun Okinbaloye, said what he was desperate about was to see Nigeria work for the teeming youths and other Nigerians facing hardship across the country.

While announcing his new party on his twitter handle on Friday morning,  the presidential hopeful said he had chosen a path that he considered to be in line with his aspirations and the mantra of taking the country from consumption to production.

Responding to a question during the programme on whether his desperation led him to dump the PDP for LP, Obi said, “Not at all, I am not desperate to be President. But what I am desperate about is to see Nigeria work. Especially for the youth of this country.

“As I said, I have moved on to where I think the process might allow me. It is not about losing or winning. I will rather lose doing the right thing than win doing the wrong thing.

“My politics have been consistent in character and integrity since I started and you can go and check. I have been consistent in seeking the right process,” he stressed.

Few days after dumping the main opposition party in Nigeria, the former Anambra State Governor and presidential hopeful, Peter Obi has formally pitched tent with the Labour Party to pursue his presidential aspiration.

He is expected to contest the presidential primary on the platform of his new party.

While announcing his new party in his verified twitter handle, Obi thanked his supporters especially the youths who have joined him “in the mission of taking back and reuniting Nigeria.”

“This project is yours and for the future of your children. I am just a facilitator.

“Since I resigned from the PDP because of issues that are at variance with my persona and principles, I have consulted widely with various parties and personalities to ensure we do not complicate the route to our desired destination.

“For me, the process of achieving our goal is as fundamental as what one will do thereafter.

“Therefore, I have chosen a route that I consider to be in line with our aspirations and my mantra of taking the country from consumption to production; and that is the Labour Party which is synonymous with the people, workers, development, production, securing and uniting Nigerians as one family.

“I invite all Nigerians to join me in taking back our country.

“Be assured that I’ll never let you down,” he vowed.

Amaechi loses bid to stop probe in alleged N96b fraud

Some hours to the commencement of All Progressives Congress, a Presidential aspirant on the platform of the party and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has lost his legal battle seeking to stop his probe in alleged N96b fraud and alleged fraudulent sale of valued assets belonging to Rivers State.

The Supreme Court in a judgment delivered on Friday ordered Amaechi to go and face the Commission of Inquiry set up by the Rivers State Government to investigate his 8-year tenure as governor of the State.

The apex Court dismissed the former governor’s appeal where he had asked for order of the court to prohibit his successor, Nyesom Wike from investigating his 8-year tenure as Executive Governor of the State.

Justice Adamu Jauro, who read lead judgment in Amaechi’s suit, held that it lacked merit, ought to be dismissed and was subsequently dismissed.

The Supreme Court affirmed the judgments of the High Court of Rivers State and that of the Court of Appeal which had earlier dismissed same suit for want of substance and merit.

With the final decision of the apex court, Amaechi will be made to appear before the Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice George Omekeji to give account of how N96b was allegedly withdrawn from the Treasury of the State government and how it was expended.

The Commission of Inquiry inaugurated by governor Nyesom Wike is to look into the lawful or otherwise of the alleged sale of valuable assets of the State.

The listed valuable assets are Omoku Gas Turbine, Afam Gas Turbine, Trans Amadi Gas Turbine, Eleme Gas Turbine, Olympia Hotel and the award of contract for the execution of Mono Rail Project.
