Following elections and transfer of power to democratically elected government in 1999, the then administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo focused on ensuring political stability, strengthening democratic practices, and tackling corruption.
On 29th June, 1999, exactly one month of assuming office, President Obasanjo abolished the Petroleum Trust Fund, a body which had been tasked with allocating the revenue from oil production.
