No fewer than 90,000 displaced families have benefitted from N275 million and food items shared by the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, who was personally on ground to supervise its distribution on Friday and Saturday morning.
This feat has sustained by Zulum administration over the years as part of multi-faced efforts to increase the resilience of communities affect by Boko Haram attacks in the State.
The governor, through the intervention, also supports the citizens with livelihoods as the raining season gradually approaches and the people transit into farming, micro, small, and medium scale businesses in order to eventually cater to themselves.
Reacting to the gesture of the governor in a statement on Saturday, Zulum's spokesperson, Mallam Isa Gusau, said the cash support has also been an effective tool in fighting Boko Haram’s ability to recruit spies from extremely poor and vulnerable communities.
Gusau noted that Monguno has been host to internally displaced persons from about five Local Government Areas in the fringes of the Lake Chad, as well as refugees who returned from Niger Republic after fleeing from Boko Haram’s attacks between 2013 and 2014.
The Governor, after interacting with the IDPs and returning refugees in Monguno on Friday, supervised the distribution of wrapper, sugar, and N5,000 each to 55,000 women, to the tune of N275 million.
After dealing with women, Zulum began midnight distribution supervision on Saturday to reach 35,000 male heads of households who had lined up in anticipation. Each of the men got two bags of rice and maize grits.
The statement also revealed that Zulum during his late night activities, visited the General Hospital to monitor healthcare services by medical personnel.
